The Korean Skincare Routine, Simplified for Australian Skin
The famous multi-step routine, adapted for our climate, water and sun. A flexible framework you can scale from 4 steps to 10 — without overwhelming your skin.
The Korean skincare routine is famous — and, let's be honest, a little intimidating. Ten steps? Every day? The good news is that the celebrated K-Beauty routine is really a flexible framework, not a rulebook. In this guide we'll simplify it for real Australian life, adapting for our climate, water and strong sun so you can build a glass skin routine that's genuinely sustainable.
The routine is a menu, not a mandate
The "10-step" routine became shorthand for thoroughness, but you don't need all ten steps every day. Think of it as a menu you draw from depending on your skin, the season and how much time you have. A well-chosen four-step routine done consistently will always beat ten steps done once a month.
Your essential K-Beauty framework
Morning
- Gentle cleanse — a mild water-based cleanser, or simply a splash of water for very dry skin.
- Hydrating toner — to rebalance and prep.
- Serum or essence — a hydrating or brightening step, such as niacinamide or vitamin C.
- Moisturiser — lightweight and comfortable.
- Sunscreen — broad-spectrum SPF 50+, non-negotiable in Australia.
Evening
- Oil or balm cleanser — to melt away sunscreen and the day.
- Water-based cleanser — the famous "double cleanse".
- Toner + essence — layers of lightweight hydration.
- Treatment — a serum, or a gentle exfoliant a few nights a week.
- Moisturiser — slightly richer at night if your skin likes it.
The best routine is the one you'll actually keep. Start small and let it grow.
Adapting for the Australian climate
K-Beauty was shaped by Korea's climate, so a few tweaks help it thrive here:
- Sun first, always. Our UV levels are among the highest in the world. Diligent SPF does more for even-looking, radiant skin than almost anything else.
- Adjust for humidity. Lighter gel textures suit humid summers up north; richer creams help through dry southern winters.
- Mind hard water. In some areas, a gentle cleanser and good moisturiser help offset the tight feeling hard water can leave.
- Layer for air-conditioning. Climate-controlled offices are drying — a hydrating mist or essence is a lovely midday reset.
Introduce actives slowly
Ingredients like retinoids and acids can be wonderful, but more is not better. Introduce one new active at a time, use it a couple of nights a week to start, and always pair with SPF the next day. If your skin ever feels tight, stingy or looks irritated, that's a cue to simplify and let your barrier recover — the opposite of the calm, hydrated glass skin look we're aiming for.
Beyond the bottle
A beautiful routine is one part of the picture. Many people find that adding calming rituals — like gua sha and facial massage — makes their skincare feel like genuine self-care. Others explore cosmetic acupuncture as a holistic complement. It all works together toward the same gentle goal: skin that looks and feels its healthiest.

If you're just beginning, keep it to four steps: cleanse, hydrate, moisturise, protect. Give it a few weeks, notice how your skin responds, then add from the menu. Want a hand tailoring it to your skin? Book a friendly consultation and we'll shape a routine around you.
